Residents to benefit from improved cycle paths

AlburyCity and Wodonga Council have been successful in securing joint funding of $300,000 to upgrade cycle paths on the border.
The funding is part of the $20 million Liveable Cities Program through the Department of Infrastructure and Transport.
Both councils will contribute $150,000 to match the Australian Government's contribution, resulting in a total spend of $600,000. Project funding will be used to increase the network of on-road bike lanes through line-marking and reconfiguration of lanes, increase availability of bike parking in the two cities and improve cycle path signage.
Wodonga Mayor Cr Mark Byatt said this funding will increase and improve cycling infrastructure in Albury and Wodonga, primarily between the Albury and Wodonga CBDs.
"The need for these works to occur was identified as part of community consultation by both councils and is reflected in their respective long-term strategic plans," he said.
"Residents are showing a continued commitment to increased participation in cycling and to reduce carbon emissions, and both councils support this sentiment."
Albury Mayor Cr Alice Glachan said she was excited that the Liveable Cities Program had placed a priority on improving cycling infrastructure in regional cities.
"We know that cycling is one of the most popular recreational activities in Albury-Wodonga and the funding we have received as part of this program will allow us to provide safer cycling routes between the Albury and Wodonga CBDs, benefiting residents and visitors alike," she said.
Specific works will involve:
Provision of an on-road cyclepath linking the Albury Railway Precinct and Murray River Trail via the CBD - works relate specifically to the section of Smollett St between Wodonga Place and Olive St. This work will increase cyclist's safety and ensure a greater level of connectivity between other cycling trails across the city, primarily the Murray River, Bungambrawatha and Albury-Thurgoona trails;
Minor upgrades to existing cycle paths linking the Albury and Wodonga CBDs;
Installation of bicycle parking and secure storage facilities at major destinations in the Albury and Wodonga CBDs, including the Albury Railway Station, Wodonga CBD, parks and recreational areas; and
Re-decking of the Wodonga Stock Bridge. This bridge is the main river crossing point for cyclists travelling between Albury and Wodonga.
Works are expected to be completed by June, 2013.
